Colour psychology: how colours impact your well-being

"Colour is a power which directly influences the soul."

Wassily Kandinsky

The broad topic of colour can not be fully explored and understood without first touching on its psychological aspects. As the quote above says colour is a great power so we should choose it carefully - from the colours of our clothes to the main and supplementary tones for our homes and the dominant colours of the art pieces we put in our spaces.

Colours have a profound ability to shape our emotions and overall well-being. Soft blues and greens evoke calmness and relaxation, while vibrant shades like yellow and red can fill the surrounding space with energy and provoke strong emotions.

Here is a short list of colours and their impact on our emotions and inner state:

Black:

  • Represents sophistication, elegance, and formality;

  • Evokes mystery and adds a luxurious feeling to the internal spaces;

Pro tip: You need to use it carefully in your redesign and refurbishment projects to avoid being overwhelming.

White:

  • An emblem of purity, cleanliness, and simplicity;

  • Creates openness and desire to connect, evokes calmness - it is ideal for achieving a minimalistic style;

Pro tip: The excessive use of white in your home or office premises may feel cold or sterile.

Red:

  • This is the colour of vivid emotions like passion, love, but also anger;

  • It stimulates senses and vitalisation;

Pro tip: Use it mindfully since it can evoke stronger emotions.

Green:

  • Symbolises nature, growth, and balance of emotions and feelings;

  • It is the symbol of calmness, reduced stress levels and enhanced focus and is an excellent choice for an office environment;

Yellow:

  • Evokes positive thoughts and feelings, stimulates mental activity and creativity;

  • It's great for achieving a balance between optimism and potential overstimulation of our senses;

Orange:

  • Represents the "golden" combination between red’s energy and yellow’s cheerfulness;

  • Conveys warmth and stimulates creativity;

  • Adding orange to our home communicates friendliness and openness;

Blue:

  • Associated with calmness and trust;

  • Conveys a feeling of peacefulness and relaxation  for the body and mind;

Purple:

  • This is the colour of royalty and high spirituality;

  • Evokes mystery and when it is used in home decor it enhances the elegance.

Thoughtfully incorporating main colours and their shades can dramatically alter the atmosphere of a room, enhancing our quality of life, and physical and psychological well-being.

Colour Trends for 2025: A Pantone Overview

Now that you know more about colours and their potential influence on our emotions and feelings, it's time to get into the colourful world of Pantone colours for 2025. Pantone is acknowledged as the world’s leading authority and source of professional colour standards for the fashion, art and design industry.

In our previous article, we talked more about types of paints and how to choose the right one depending on our goals. Now we will emphasise the importance of selecting the perfect colours as key elements in transforming living spaces and adding new life to our home spaces.  They can reflect not only our personality but also our style and mood. That's why our recommendation when choosing colours is to listen to your intuition and trust your inner feelings. Embrace your personal style and give freedom to your feelings!

And as Lee Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute says about the forecasted colours of 2025:

"Functional and adaptable, they are reliable and robust, servicing our increasingly hybridised style of living, providing a strong chromatic foundation and at the same time delivering playful and energetic accents for moments of magic."

Each year the renowned Pantone Colour Institute reveals the forecasted colours for the upcoming year and these are the benchmarks for textiles and interior design. The Institute releases the Pantone® Fashion Colour Trend Report, offering colour trend forecasts for the upcoming season and showcasing the top shades expected at New York and London Fashion Weeks. The report serves as a colour guide for home designers, brands, and style enthusiasts, highlighting the top ten standout colours along with five new core palettes.

Peach fuzz was the colour of the year 2024 and Pantone's forecasted colour for the next year is Future Dusk. This is a stunning fusion of rich violet and midnight blue and the upcoming trends blend in a perfect symbiosis of functionality, sensuality, and playfulness.

Incorporating the Pantone 2025 Colours Into Home Design Projects

Here's how to incorporate these colours into your home or office refurbishment projects - either subtly or boldly, depending firstly on your personal style preferences.

There is a simple 60-30-10 rule in the colour theory:

  • 60% of the room should be in the main colour: choose the main colour for huge pieces of furniture like the couch or the carpet;

  • 30% is devoted to the secondary colour: it is typically selected for soft textile accessories like pillows, blankets, or curtains;

  • 10% is aimed at balancing the colours - add colour accents via some accent elements and accessories like art pieces.

Now that you’re familiar with the trendy colours of the year ahead, you might be wondering how to incorporate them into your home and create spaces for relaxation and harmonious stay.

Here’s a few ideas to guide you:

  • Mix & Match: Create a mood board to experiment with various colour combinations to find your unique style. The colour nuances work together seamlessly, allowing for achieving impressive contrasts; You can buy tester-size paint pots and get messy or do it on a computer or tablet. We think it is always more fun (and true to life) to buy the actual paint.

  • Add Accents: introduce new colours through accent walls, furniture, or decorations. Small colourful accents can have a powerful impact and can really enhance the atmosphere in a room. Imagine how adding bright pillows or a colourful rug to an earthy-coloured living room can instantly lift the space  and make it feel more vibrant and welcoming;

  • Natural Light: daylight is a powerful factor that changes the way colours look. Depending on how much natural light comes in your room this affects the shades you choose. We will talk about light and directions a little bit later.

Pro tip: Colours reflect the surrounding colours and change depending on the light. They can look drastically different in different conditions. If you are in the middle of your long-waited refurbishment project and you are eager to add the final touch but haven't yet tried samples and swatches, do so before applying them to a whole wall to ensure the colours truly align with your vision. Or better trust an expert's vision and hire a professional design company for your refurbishment project.

Utilising Non-Standard Home Spaces with Colour Techniques

If you have non-standard home spaces which you have always wondered how to decorate, why don't you consider using the following colour techniques?

  • Playing with Dark and Light Tones: thanks to the optical illusion and expansion you can use light shades or pastels to make small or non-standard shaped rooms feel larger and more open;

  • Experiment with Warm and Cold Colours: if you need to reduce a larger or unusual space, the key is to use darker tones. They can create a cosy and harmonious atmosphere in narrow or under-utilised areas;

  • Colourful Accents and Focal Points: although they represent only 10% of the colours in a space as we mentioned above, the colourful accents and focal points could turn out to be the most significant and noticeable in a room. Accent-coloured walls and focal elements can both add playfulness and a sense of movement in a non-standard narrow space.

Accent-coloured walls can be used not only for non-standard places but also to add a reviving touch to your living rooms, bedrooms, or kitchens.

Choosing Colours Based on Wall Directions

Whether relying on your intuition or not when selecting colours for your home spaces, take into account some specifications related to your wall directions. Some colours and shades appear to be more suitable than others if we talk about a north-facing room instead of a south-faced one. Why? Because the quality of natural light, along with the time of day and season significantly influence how we perceive colours.

  • North-Facing Rooms: they receive less light during the day, which can make them seem somehow dim. Colours with green, grey, or blue undertones may add even colder feelings so it’s better to select earthy with warm hints of red, yellow, or orange;

  • East-Facing Rooms: they enjoy warmer light in the morning, but it fades and cools as the day progresses. You can balance this light's process by selecting soft with warmer or cooler undertones, or utilise the room's transforming light by picking a colour that subtly changes in tone throughout the day;

  • West-Facing Rooms:  in contrast to what we said about the east-positioned rooms, west-facing rooms become brighter and warmer in the afternoon and evening. So you can apply the opposite techniques for maximum benefit from this orientation;

  • South-Facing Rooms: they receive the brightest and strongest light all day. However, the intensity of the light can exaggerate warm undertones and choosing neutrals with strong red or yellow hues can appear overwhelming. It's better to select colours with cooler nuance like blue, green, or violet. This way you will achieve a balanced and more inviting atmosphere.

Using Prints and Patterns with Trending Colours

To achieve a harmonious atmosphere in your living space you need to choose the right symbiosis of not only colour but also the shape and size of the print or pattern you want to put in the home space. Remember that the patterns you select can significantly influence the overall feeling of the room.

Tips for Using Prints and Patterns:

  • Small vs. Large Prints and Patterns: explore the effects of different scale patterns in a room. You can incorporate large-scale patterns as the primary design element, and pair them with medium or smaller patterns for accent details;

  • Use a similar colour palette: mixing various patterns and colours can dominate a room and create chaotic rather than calm feelings. Try to stick to colour schemes within the same tonal family or palette and this can foster a visually appealing space. Again you can follow the useful 60-30-10 rule for balance;

  • When less is more: it's recommended to choose up to three or four patterns to focus on when you redesign your room’s style. Mixing patterns can add energy to a space, but at the same time using too many of them without a focus or clear strategy can create a cluttered appearance instead of an aesthetically pleasing look.

Ceiling Colour Tendencies

Ceilings are often underrated and receive little to no attention. But they are a great choice for creating a wonderful colour oasis and design change in your home.

Here are our recommendations on what is trendy in terms of ceilings.

White Ceilings or Why Classic Never Fades

Who says that white is boring? For any room, wall or ceiling, all-white or off-white paint colour is always a fresh and clean choice if you prefer the feeling of purity, freshness and light. White is the classic that will never fade, so if you don't feel like experimenting with something bold and extraordinary for your ceilings, go for white and you won't go wrong.

Light Pantone Colours

Antique White would be a great choice if you prefer the light hues. Using light colours on ceilings creates the appearance of added height and changes the room's overall look.

Dark Pantone Colours

Consider a paint colour that is two to three shades darker on your ceiling than your walls. Rooms with dark tones for ceilings feel cosy and comfortable, making any room feel welcoming.

Use the Same Colours for Ceilings and Walls

Colour-saturated rooms feature a single hue in different shades to create a unified and striking appearance. This decision is ideal for those who enjoy bold interior decisions, want to make a statement or add a touch of chic personality to their spaces.

Stunning Lightning

Lighting has evolved beyond mere functionality and it’s now a crucial design feature that shapes a room’s atmosphere. Modern lighting fixtures, ranging from large to sculptural lamps, often serve as artistic statements. You can add eye-catching light sources to highlight and express your style, and consider using dimmable lights to easily adjust the room’s mood throughout the day.

Conclusion

Pantone’s 2025 colour trends provide a dynamic mixture of hues that cater to both functional and aesthetic needs in home decoration. From calming neutrals to bold, energetic shades, these colours allow you to express your creativity in transforming your living or office spaces. Whether you’re looking to balance light with subtle tones or go for vibrant accent walls, the new palette offers both flexibility and elegance.
